The Keep Jenifer and Ali together campaign is now
at an end
Ali has received discretionary leave for three years after we
won our case on human rights grounds and is about to start
his first job, as you can imagine he is so excited.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported the campaign,
your kind words have touched us both.
We would also like to thank NCADC for all their support, without
their help in publicising our campaign and that of the national
campaign, 'Brides without Borders' we do not believe we could have
had such a successful outcome.
We will continue to support other couples in the same situation
and are looking forward to getting on with the rest of our lives.
Many, many thanks to you all
Love Jenifer and Ali xxxx
Keep Jenifer and Ali together
Jenifer Martin, a further education lecturer and her Iranian husband, a volunteer
with Oxfam, are campaigning to stay in Scotland. Although they have been married
nearly three years, the Home Office have refused to grant permission for Ali
to stay or to work in the UK. They plan to send him back to Iran where he could
face imprisonment or worse for taking part in an illegal demonstration for water
shortages.
Ali came to the UK in October 2000. He suffered a horrific accident on arrival
when he was run over by a lorry and subsequently spent a month in hospital before
claiming asylum. Unfortunately his application was refused. By this time he had
been dispersed to Glasgow and had met and planned to marry Jenifer. They were
finally married in 2002.
Even though the Home Office believe Ali and Jenifer are genuinely married,
their application was refused in February 2005. No opportunity to state their
case at interview was given. It was refused simply because of Ali's failed
asylum application and because the Home Office claim Jenifer could easily move
to Iran.
To do this Jenifer would have to give up her job, way of life, her religious
freedom and possibly her British Citizenship, as Iran does not recognise dual
nationality. Ali has a settled life here in the UK and has nothing to go back
to. It is also uncertain what would happen to Ali given his political views.
It is currently too dangerous for Jenifer and Ali in Iran. Even the Foreign
Office website “strongly advises against” travel to parts of the
country. Removing Ali would result in their forced separation. As you can imagine
this uncertainty is extremely stressful and has adversely affected every area
of their lives.
Through this campaign we aim to put pressure on the Home Office and to inform
people of the way immigration control is handled in this country by dividing
families and couples with no regard for the human rights or private lives of
those involved.
Jenifer and Ali are now waiting for their appeal date in the civil immigration
court. Please offer your support to ensure they get the response they deserve.
What you can do to help
Jenifer, Ali their friends and supporters in Glasgow have set up a campaign
to try and persuade Tony McNulty, Minister for Immigration to allow the family
to remain in the UK. The campaign has drawn up a petition and model letter
attached, which they are asking everyone to print off, fill them in and get
as many other people as possible to do the same, and return them to the campaign
office. When they have collected enough signatures, the campaign will present
them to the Minister.
