Haslar Detention Prison: On Monday 20 April, a hunger strike against conditions and length of stay. was defeated on 21 April by the removal of ten detainees to Winchester Prison.Sir David Ramsbotham's report on Campsfield which was in the hands of the Labour Government at the time, states: . . "When detainees begin to behave in a disruptive way the only available control option appears to be the removal to prison . . . . .which is a grossly inappropriate and unsatisfactory sanction . . . United Nations High Commission for Refugee guidelines specifically state that asylum seekers should not be held with criminals. . . . Exposing detainees to custody, alongside some elements of the prison population, is not only a corrupting experience, but cannot be justified on grounds of safety" . . .
Asylum Seekers have been forced to abandon their homes, communities and countries because they fear persecution or human rights abuse.Every single refugee is the consequence of a government's failure to protect human rights.Refugees are entitled to international protection, but governments are increasingly ignoring their obligations towards them.As a result, the international system to protect refugees is in crisis. Each time it fails, a life is put at risk.
