 Still Here, Still Fighting

Zuber Latif: Hackney has had his judicial review adjourned pending a decision in another case. The Latif family argue that if Zuber is deported to India the Home Office will have violated Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights. A consultant psychiatrist has stated that Mrs Khatija Latif's health will be put at risk if she and her child are separated from Zuber, or if they are forced to go with him to India - a country she has never seen nor lived in.

Sengul Family: are liaising with the Medical Foundation for Care of Victims of Torture for help with presenting their asylum claim. The campaign lobbied Islington Council education committee, over the summer and the newly elected chair of education has agreed to write to the Home Office supporting them and any other families threatened with deportation who have children in Islington schools. The new education committee also agreed that schools should be free to support families of students threatened with deportation - a reversal of policy from the pre-election committee and an important victory for the Senguls and all deportees with children in Islington.

Emmanuel Eboka: Bermondsey, has been given permission to take employment and has got a job as a chef. He still has to register with the police every month and is having difficulty getting time off work to go and sign.The campaign are getting support from the local Unison and Usdaw trade union branches.

Amin and Faye Bekai are still waiting for the decision of the special adjudicator on Amin's asylum appeal. Medical reports have shown that Faye Bekai is suffering from severe schizophrenia and that she and their child would suffer terribly if the family were broken up by Amin's deportation to Algeria.

Victor Ovienrioba, from Edmonton, has been refused leave to Appeal against his deportation order. His MP Andy Love has made further representations to the Immigration Minister and the Ovienrioba Campaign are organising a letter writing campaign to London MPs.

Islington Anti-Deportation Group are following up a roof-top protest on Pentonville Prison in September by an asylum seeker from Kosovo. Links are being made with Kosovan refugee groups and solidarity actions are planned. More details from Dave on 0171 281 7545.

Abdou Mahmoud from Bedford had an appeal hearing in Birmingham on 21 September. A coach filled with supporters accompanied Abdou and his partner Russell, to the hearing and held a lively demo outside the Appellate Authority. Campaigns from the West Midlands area also joined the demonstration.

Dandjinou Family: Acton, held their first public meeting on Tuesday 22 September. Erick his wife Anick and their daughter Oneeka, were only hours away from deportation in August. Last minute representation form a new solicitor persuaded the Home Office to defer the removal until they received new evidence.

Iqbal Family: Bury, supporters have formed a football team to raise funds for the campaign and have played their first match, Manchester United watch out.

Michelle Ricablanca: Manchester, the campaign goes from strength to strength, a very active defence capaign is now supporting Michelle's wish to remain in the UK with her brother.

Okolo Family: Manchester, having won their fight to remain in the UK, are still active. The "Okolo Family" story book is about to be published. A joint venture by the children's school St Phillips' and "The Save the Children Fund".
