National Meeting of NCADC

A national meeting of NCADC took place in Birmingham at the end of November at the offices of Birmingham Unison. Anti-deportation campaigns from around the country came together to tell their stories, seek advice and to draw strength and support from one another.

There were established campaigns such as the Ozbays and the Sengul Family from Islington, Mary Njuguna from Camden, Victor Ovienrioba from Edmonton and Buba Barrow from Birmingham. Also present were Joyce and Abdul Onibiyo who won their campaign against deportation last year and Mansanga and Feliciana Nanga and Muyeke Lemba who won their campaigns. They spoke of the importance of campaigning and that they were living proof that a determined campaign could overcome injustice.

There were also people new to the Coalition like George Ekontang, Doris Omoregie and Claudia & Luis Sanchez at the meeting. They had exhausted their legal process and, with the threat of deportation hanging over them, wanted to start campaigning.
What united all these different people with different cases was their common vulnerability to racist and discriminatory immigration legislation and their common determination to overcome the injustice the Home Office seeks to perpetrate against them.

The meeting also discussed various ways of getting publicity for campaigns, how to organise meetings and how important it was to get support from local people in the community and trade unions

The importance of opposing the proposals in the Government's Immigration White Paper becoming law was agreed unanimously and that joint work with the National Assembly Against Racism and other groups in opposing any new bill to implement these proposals was overwhelming
