Under Pressure but Smiling Through

Mary Wandia Njuguna is still fighting deportation to Kenya. Mary and her British-born son, 5 year old Patrick, have lived in Camden, London since 1994. Mary and her friends and supporters were alarmed and distressed when Home Office officials came to her flat early on a Sunday morning in November to serve a deportation notice on her. After urgent action by her campaign, to support Mary's right to stay, the deportation was deferred.
Mary fled to Britain after discovering evidence of corruption by an electoral commissioner.. Mary and her colleagues were threatened and she was warned her life was in danger if she did not leave quickly. The Home Office is now attempting to send her back to Kenya and disrupt the life of her son, who knows no other country than Britain.
In November Mary's solicitor lodged an application for a Judicial Review of the case on the grounds that Patrick's interests had not been taken into account when the Home Office determined to deport his mother. A response in expected in late-January. Meanwhile the campaign is working to secure the support of the local labour movement and community groups.
