Ajit Singh is a well respected by the Sikh Community of Leicester
and many people have asked us to take action about his removal from
the UK. Ajit is currently being held in detention at HMP Cardiff.
Whilst living in India, (Ajit Singh, comes from Sagnawal village,
Punjab) he was a member of Mann Akali Dal and advocated for the
establishment of an independent Sikh state by peaceful means free
from persecution and genocide from the Indian Authorities.
Due to his political beliefs he was arrested and tortured on many
occasions by the Indian police and his entire family have been subject
to state persectuion.
The Home Office are continuing deportion actions against Ajit
Singh even though he has proved that there are warrants for his
arrest which were falsely issued by the Punjab police. A report
has been prepared by the Medical foundation for the Care of Victims
of Torture giving evidence that he has been severely tortured which
has an impact on his physical and mental state.
The authorities in India are totally against the political movement
for Khalistan, and many people advocating for this cause have been
tortured and killed by the Indian police and army.
Fearing for his life he left India in 1991 after selling part
of his land in order to raise enough money for him to leave.
Whilst in the UK he has continued with his political activities
and has openly criticised the human rights abuses being committed
in India. He was the president of the International Sikh Youth Federation
(ISYF) Leicester branch until the Home Office proscribed it.
Even today his family have been suffering from continued harassment
from the Indian police. As a result his son, Jaswinder Singh, has
also been forced to leave India and is now in the UK seeking political
asylum.
The authorities are currently detaining him at HMP Cardiff. He
was detained on the 22nd of May 2001, after almost 10 years living
in the UK advocating against Human Right abuses in India.
We appeal to the Home Secretary to release and grant asylum on
humanitarian grounds as we fear for his life if returned to India.
