Hard Cases Support Grant

     This grant is limited to asylum seekers who have been refused asylum, who have no further appeal rights and are unable to leave the UK. This could be due to physical impediment (for example having a severe medical condition or being in the late stages of pregnancy) or exceptional circumstances.

     As of 21 November 2001, the criteria for qualifying for a hard cases support grant at the end of the asylum process has been extended to include: "those who have been granted permission for a judicial review of any determination in respect of his or her application for asylum, or have made an application for permission to apply for judicial review and the application does not appear to be wholly unmeritorious".

     Hard case support comprises basic full board accommodation, normally outside London. Those supported may be required to subject themselves to regular monthly reviews. To receive a hard case support grant, the person must be able to show that they are complying with efforts to remove them. This means that you are fulfilling any bail conditions regarding residency or signing restrictions.

     Applications for this grant should be made in writing, setting out why the ex-asylum seekers believes him/herself to be eligible. This should be sent to:
