A report by 'Statewatch', who monitor the state and civil liberties in
the European Union (EU), makes grim reading. It seems that from2003/4
all those who are granted full 'Refugee Status' or *'Subsidiary Protection',
will not be allowed to settle in the EU on a permanent basis. Their status
will be reviewed frequently with a view to revoking the status and removing
them from the EU.
'Statewatch', also reports on a EU directive, which seems to be intent
on undermining the Geneva Convention's definition of who qualifies for
refugee status.
*'Subsidiary Protection', in the UK this was known as Exceptional Leave
to Remain (ELR), now replaced by 'Humanitarian Concession'.
