Asylum and Immigration: Removals Inquiry

Home Affairs Committee

Opening session, Tuesday 21st January 2003 @ 2.30pm, members of the public are invited to attend.

The Home Affairs Committee begins its inquiry into the asylum and immigration removals process with the following terms of reference:

* Whether the Government's targets for removals are realistic and capable of being carried out.

* What are the most effective and humane methods of removal?

* are the constraints on removal to specific countries?

* What compassionate factors should be taken into account (e.g. young children who have lived in the UK for most of their lives)?

* What incentives there are to encourage those refused asylum to leave voluntarily and to assist with resettlement in their country of origin.

The following evidence sessions have been arranged as part of the above inquiry:

Tuesday 21 January, 2.30 pm

Beverley Hughes MP, Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Community Cohesion, and Home Office officials

Tuesday 28 January,9.00 am

Representatives from Wackenhut, Loss Prevention International; Group 4 Falck Global Solutions Ltd, Premier Custodial Group and UK Detention Services

All sessions will take place in either the Palace of Westminster or Portcullis House committee rooms. These sessions will be open to the public on a first come, first served basis.

Home Affairs Committee

The Home Affairs Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Home Office and the Lord Chancellor's Department, and their associated public bodies; and the administration and expenditure of the Attorney General's Office, the Treasury Solicitor's Department, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Serious Fraud Office.
