Badawi Ismail Must Stay

(posted Saturday 17th May 2003)

Badawi Ismail is a Sudanese (ethnic Nuba) asylum seeker who despite being supported by a number of Sudan experts and activists has been refused asylum by the Home Office.

The  Sudanese government have brutally persecuted the Nuba tribes people of Central Sudan.  Badawi was conscripted into the government led Sudanese army (PDF) which has operated against the Nuba for many years in their home territory.  While with the armed forces he was approached by the local Nuba people and became involved in their efforts to defend themselves.  He was arrested by the government forces and beaten but managed to escape and left the country.

Since being in Britain he has been involved in the Nuba Mountains Solidarity Abroad (NMSA) UK branch.

According to Peter Verney, a Sudan expert who has 12 years  experience of working for human rights in Sudan, Badawi's involvement in the NMSA puts him at further risk from the government forces in Sudan as they monitor activism abroad.

Badawi is supported by Peter Verney, and Suliman Rahhal, the founder of NMSA and a dedicated defender of Nuba human rights for over ten years and by Omer Shurkian of NMSA an official of the organisation who carried out substantial checks on Badawi before admitting him to the organisation.  All of the above have expressed great concerns for Badawi's safety should he be be deported to the Sudan.

Badawi is currently in detention and could be removed any day.

Below is a comprehensive background report on Badawi's case.
