Ali Serir Must Stay
Karen Serir has lived in Royston, Glasgow,
for over 20 years. She married Algerian refugee Ali Serir, 18 months ago.
She is 6 months pregnant.
On 6th February at 5.20am, she and her
husband were raided by Lothian and Borders Anti-Terrorist Squad. Their
front door was smashed in. They were hand-cuffed at gunpoint and driven
to Govan Police Station. Karen was held for 40 hours.
No charges against her or Ali were
made. Yet Ali and Karen were named in the Algerian
Press as terrorists. If Ali is returned to Algeria, he is likely to face
imprisonment at best, execution at worst.
Unfortunately Ali is still being held
at Greenock Prison. The Home Office is victimising Ali and refusing to
recognise his marriage as genuine and he is facing deportation.
Karen has been told she can go to Algeria
if she wants to join him yet the Foreign Office is instructing
all British citizens not to travel to travel to Algeria or to leave immediately.
The Home Office has just announced that
they intend to deport Ali on the 16th May. Since he has been denied legal
aid to fight his case, donations are urgently required.
Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees,
have set up a campaign to keep Ali in the UK and are circulating a petition,
'asking that Ali Serir be released immediately to be reunited with his
wife, and that deportation proceedings be abandoned.
