Ali Serir - Deportation Stayed
A week of hard campaigning for Ali Serir paid off yesterday when the Home Office agreed to stay the deportation pending a review of Ali's case. Ali is still in prison but a bail application will be made as soon as possible.
Clearly the fight to keep Ali in the UK is not yet over. Nonetheless celebrations are in order - but be prepared for future action.

The Ali Serir Campaign would like to thank all who signed the petition.

Ali Serir Must Stay - Urgent Signatures wanted

An Algerian asylum seeker attempted to hang himself in Lindholme removal centre on the morning of Sunday 27th April 2003. Luckily his cell mate (another Algerian asylum seeker who has been in the UK for 14 years) came back and cut him down before permanent damage was done. He was taken to hospital but no word has come back to the detainees of his health or whereabouts, his clothes and belongings are still in the cell.

An ex-detainee, commenting on the attempted self harm said:
"I found this story very moving to read. For me personally it brings back tears of my experiences back in detention. Unfortunately and worryingly - the indifferent reaction from staff of the removal centre is neither uncommon nor surprising. There seems to be an unbelievable cruelty among staff and immigration service that there is no need for detainees to know anything about the whereabouts or wellbeing of the victim."
