Olayinka Olowoporuku Must stay
Olayinka
Olowoporuku is a Nigerian Christian asylum seeker who spoke out
against Shari'a Law in his country and was forced to flee in July
2001 after a Fatwa was issued by local Islamic leaders demanding
his murder. Soon after making his comments Mr Olowoporoku was
attacked with a machette and his shop was burned down.
The attackers then moved onto his home and burned that
down too. Mr Olowoporoku does not know if his wife and children
were in the house at the time of the attack. He was informed about the Fatwa and told
that his life was in danger.
He reported his attacks to the police but they were unwilling to help him and no one was prosecuted. At the same time posters with his photograph
on calling for Muslims to carry out their duty and kill him appeared
in his neighbourhood. He
decided to flee the country.
He does not know the whereabouts of his family or if indeed
they are alive. Tensions between Christians and Muslims
in Nigeria are well documented and many lives have been lost in
violent conflicts. Extremist
groups have good networks all over Nigeria and he would be at
risk where ever he was in the country.
Olayinka
lived in North London for a year until he was arrested and detained
in September 2002. He
has been in detention ever since and is now in the Dover Immigration
Removal Centre.
His doctors
have diagnosed him as suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
and depression however in detention he is not receiving the medical
treatment he needs.
Olayinka's
brother Adesegun has lived in the UK for 15 years and has Indefinite
Leave to Remain. Mr
Olowoporoku has 2 nephews and a niece and he is very close to
his family.
