Home Office puts misleading spin on own report

Afghanistan refugee returns: 'Out of sight, out of mind'
Amnesty International on Monday 23 June 2003 singled out the UK, alongside Afghanistan's immediate neighbours, for criticism for its policy of returning refugees to Afghanistan.
The organisation said that the security situation in Afghanistan had deteriorated in 2003, with at least two thirds of the country now in a situation of "generalised instability." There have been armed attacks on the security forces in Kabul, local commanders continue to fight turf wars, civilians are often killed, women and girls are forced to marry and property is destroyed. Australian Family Court Rules against Indefinite Detention of Children
In a more than welcome decision on Thursday 19th June 2003 the Australian Family Court ruled against the indefinite detention of children. Chief Justice Alastair Nicholson, and Justice Stephen O'Ryan made the majority ruling that the court's welfare jurisdiction extended to the protection of children in immigration detention.

Judges were hearing an appeal by two children aged 12 and 14 who at the time of the hearing were still in detention with their parents. The children had filed the action for their release in that their continued detention was harmful to there welfare. The decision does not affect the parents.      There were 108 children in Australia's detention centres at the time of the decision.

The Australian Government have lodged an appeal against the decision and a stay against the family court decision, which mean the children will remain in detention.

Home Office to refuse legal representation for initial asylum interviews

According to an article 'Asylum-seekers face cuts in bid to reduce legal aid bill' in todays Independent the Lord Chancellor's Department, are proposing to severely cut the amount of legal aid available to asylum seekers. Five hours will be the maximum that an asylum seeker would be entitled to.
Even more draconian, is the proposal that asylum seekers will 'not' be allowed legal representation at the 'initial' Home Office interview. This is particularly worrying as this is the crucial interview and where things can go badly wrong if the asylum claimant is not properly advised before and represented at the interview.
