Boris Lidovski must stay!

The threat of imminent deportation of a Communication Workers Union (CWU) member who sought asylum in Britain after being threatened at gunpoint by Russian gangsters has prompted the launch of a campaign to allow him to stay in Britain.

Supported, amongst others, by CWU general secretary Billy Hayes, Norwich MP Ian Gibson and CWU Eastern Regional Secretary John Colbert, the 'Boris Lidovski must stay!' campaign is now urgently seeking support from the public, trade Unions and CWU members across the country.

Eastern No 4 branch area processing rep Paul Turnbull, who is leading the campaign, is convinced that Boris - who has been working as a postman at Cambridge Mail Centre since October 1998 - would be in very real danger if he is forced to return to Russia.

Boris, who has bought a house since his arrival in 1997, is a member of the Labour Party and has a
partner whose son now calls him 'Dad', learned his original claim for asylum had been turned down in December 2001.

Despite conceding that " organised crime has become a significant factor in the political and economic life of Russia, with the number of criminal organisations operating in the country increasing from 3,000 in 1992 to 9,000 in 1998," the Home Office ruled that the "individual merits" of Boris' case did not warrant asylum to be granted.

An appeal hearing took place in May 2003 with Boris being informed on June 19 that the appeal had been dismissed.

Paul Turnbull told the Voice (magazine of the CWU): "All legal avenues have been exhausted and the only option left is to organise a campaign to ask the Home Office to grant Boris discretionary leave."

To that end, he is appealing on behalf of the campaign that the public, trade unions and CWU members across the country sign the attached petition.
