Called by Scottish Trade Union Council (STUC)
"Strong feelings were aroused by
the deportation last week of a Kurdish mother and her four children,
who came here from Turkey via Germany, after their detention in Scotland
for more than a year."
"Across the spectrum of Scottish
society, most felt the detention of children, innocent of any crime
was quite simply morally wrong."
"Leading figures
from Scottish churches, charities, business, sport and the arts have
spoken out over the plight of children in Scotland's Dungavel detention
centre.
" Many felt that imprisoning children
in the centre was simply wrong and said alternatives to locking up the
children of would-be refugees should be found." Glasgow Herald
"It is a disgrace
that young children from perhaps the age of five to 14 are held in a
prison environment" Bishop John Mone.
"The detention
of children should be avoided wherever possible, and only take place
for the shortest possible time, in no case more than seven days."
Anne Owers Chief Inspectorate of UK Detention Estate, April 2003
The
demonstration will call for:
* The closure of Dungavel Detention Centre in favour of a more humane
system for accommodating Asylum Seekers and their families in Scotland.
* An end to the enforced detention of Asylum seekers and their families,
which breaches their human rights.
* All children residing in Scotland to be able to access mainstream
education.
Please also do everything you can to get along and show your support
for our Dungavel demonstration.
Bring
your banners and your friends.
