Australia: Children released from detention
The Australian Family Court on Monday 25th August 2003, ordered the release of 5 children from detention and the children were released into the care of a local welfare agency. The three girls and two boys have been placed with a family in Adelaide.
Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock has said the government will abide by the decision pending a full hearing of their appeal against the Family Courts original ruling that the Family Courts had jurisdiction in all matters relating to children.
The courts decision overruled an earlier court ruling that though the court was of the opinion that the children should be released it was not in the children's interest to separate them from their parents.
Mondays decision argued that though there would and will be problems with separating the family, but the continued detention of the children was far more dangerous.
The children's parents are still detained the father in a detention centre their mother who has been moved from a detention centre for health reasons is being held under guard in a Adelaide motel.
The children will be taken to see their parents every weekend until next month when a full hearing of the appeal will take place.

End the detention of children:

Anne Owers, Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales, has released another damning report on the UK's detention estate. The long awaited report on Dungavel Removal Centre released today reiterates her call made earlier this year for the ending of detaining children for longer than seven days. On Dungavel she said:
"We are concerned about the welfare and development of children within a locked-in custodial setting,"
"It remains our view that however conscientiously and humanely children in detention are dealt with, it is not possible to meet the full range of their developmental needs."
"The detention of children should be an exceptional measure and should not exceed a very short period - no more than a matter of days."
"The welfare and development of children is likely to be compromised by detention, however humane the provisions, and that will increase the longer detention is maintained."

Anne Owers report on Dungavel Removal Centre

The report will strengthen calls for the 'Demonstration to Close Dungavel' on September 6th called by the Scottish Trade Union Council (STUC). Details down page.
