CADIC welcomes end to deportation of Irish children  and their Migrant parents

The Coalition Against the Deportation of Irish Children, (CADIC), have welcomed the Irish government's decision to discuss proposals for granting residency in Ireland to migrant families with Irish children, up to 17,000 families could benefit from the proposed changes.

Salome Mbugua of AkiDWa, a member of CADIC said:  "This will be a welcome message for families whose lives, and that of their children, have been on hold for at least two years. It should be recalled that for the vast majority of these parents, they came to Ireland lawfully and had applied for residency under a system established by the Department of Justice. Their children were born here before the government decided to change policy. They have faced nothing but uncertainty and anxiety and this will at least offer them some hope that this limbo will end soon.

Having campaigned and lobbied for 18 months for the rights of these families, CADIC is hoping that the proposals will provide a positive resolution to the needs and rights of the Irish children and their families. Aisling Reidy, of the ICCL commented:

We look forward to examining what we hope will be a transparent, fair and human rights based policy. The proposals could offer a real opportunity to bring to an end what has been an unnecessary and unjust policy. While there are many details to be resolved, we will be looking to ensure that the proposals guarantee full respect for the constitutional and human rights of the families."

Echoing the concerns that the proposals will comply with Ireland's international obligations, Sarah Benson of the Children's Rights Alliance noted:

The government must also ensure that the best interest of the children is at the heart of these proposals. CADIC has been calling for a child impact assessment to be part of the government's proposals and this should now happen. The National Children's Strategy obliges Government to undertake a child impact review before taking any major decision or action with significant consequences for children. We are happy to work with the government in putting in place that process.

CADIC would like to thank all those outside Ireland and in, who took part in the Campaign to Stop the Deportation of  Irish Children and their Migrant parents.
