A report from Saturday’s demo against deportations to Afghanistan, outside the Afghan Parliament in Kabul. From our friends at the Kabul blog, ‘Stop Deportations to Afghanistan’. On 9th November 2013 dozens of deportees and the families of those affected by deportations gathered in front of Afghan Parliament to demonstrate against deportations to Afghanistan. Afghanistan: return and re-integration prospects

“We Have the Promises of the World”. Human Rights Watch report ‘Afghan women continue to be among the worst off in the world. Their situation is dismal in every area, including in health, education, employment, freedom from violence, equality before the law, and political participation.’ Eight years after the fall of the Taliban, women and girls suffer high levels of violence and discrimination and have poor access to justice and education. War: what is good for?

Well, immigration control, according to UK Immigration Minsister Phil Woolas. In a quite bizarre statement, Woolas told MP that a benefit of the war in Afghanistan is to keep asylum seekers out of Europe: “An argument that is not aired strongly enough in my view is the benefit of the presence of our armed forces and other countries’ is to help us control immigration.” Unsurprisingly, this justification of the already unpopular campaign has caused quite some controversy, coming as it did the day after 5 British soldiers lost their lives.
