Sri Lanka: Stop the mass deportation

The UK government is planning a mass deportation of around 50 Sri Lankan refugees tomorrow, 28 September, despite strong evidence that this action will put many vulnerable people into danger.

The private charter - Flight PVT030 at 15:00 hrs on Wednesday 28th September - follows a similar mass removal in June this year, which caused huge controversy when it was revealed that the UK Border Agency had passed confidential asylum claim papers to the Sri Lankan authorities

This week, UK charity Freedom From Torture expressed grave concerns about the fate of Sri Lankans forcibly removed from the UK, particularly Tamils, and Human Rights Watch criticised the UK government for having yet to declare its support for an independent, impartial investigation into war crimes.

Freedom From Torture presented evidence at an event at the Labour Party conference this week that torture continues long after the cessation of hostilities in the country.

NCADC has spoken with relatives of people returned on the last flight in June. All are too frightened to be identified, for fear of reprisals, but many spoke of returnees being detained and interrogated in Colombo. One told of her relative who returned to find his former home destroyed. Three months on, he is living in a tent.

In light of these concerns, NCADC believes there should be an immediate halt on all planned removals to Sri Lanka, and in particular this mass deportation.

Please take action to try and stop this flight.

Contact the Home Secretary, the depute Prime Minister, and the Chair and Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils.

Demand that they intervene to stop this removal.
