African HIV Policy Network (AHPN) - a call for help

Following a particularly cruel deportation of an HIV+ mother and her child - despite Home Office assurances that a fresh asylum application could be made - AHPN is calling for help in collecting evidence of similar cases. AHPN aims to collate a body of evidence to try and force a change in policy to protect and give sanctuary to people living with HIV. Detained Nigerian girl tried to strangle herself

A 10-year-old Nigerian girl placed in immigration detention for a second time - despite warnings from experts that she might try to kill herself if she was incarcerated again - has been found trying to strangle herself at Tinsley House immigration removal centre. Adeoti Ogunsola told the guards she would rather die in England than in Nigeria, where she believes her life will be at risk if she is returned. Judge: Colnbrook blockaders’ arrest was unlawful

A magistrates judge has ruled that police acted unlawfully when arresting six anti-deportation campaigners who were blockading Colnbrook detention centre, near Heathrow airport, on 12th May, 2009, to try and prevent Iraqi refugees from being forcibly deported to Iraqi Kurdistan on a specially chartered flight. Sitting at the Uxbridge Magistrates Court, judge Jane Wright concluded that “the exclusive aim” of giving the order under Section 14 of the Public Order Act by the senior police officer present at the scene, Inspector Beattie, was “to facilitate the deportation of a number of people to Iraq without further ado.”

Protests as UK attempts mass deportations to Iraq

Last Thursday, 15 October 2009, the UK Border Agency tried to deport by charter flight about 40 Iraqi refugees who had been refused sanctuary in the UK. However, on arrival at Baghdad airport it appears that Iraqi officials refused entry to most of those onboard. Only eight people were taken from the plane, and there are conflicting reports as to whether they left voluntarily or were forcibly removed. The operation has been widely condemned as a fiasco that was cruel, ill-conceived and inhumane, with protests in London and the launch of campaign to end forced removals to Iraq.

Children made ‘sick with fear’ in detention centres

The Guardian reports on a new report highlighting systemic child abuse in UK immigration detention centres. Medical experts have found clear evidence that children held in UK immigration centres develop mental and physical health difficulties, according to a report published today. In the first study of its kind, a team of paediatricians and psychologists found 73% of children they examined had developed clinically significant emotional and behavioural problems since being detained. None had previously reported such problems. All those seen by a psychologist displayed symptoms of depression and anxiety and of being disoriented, confused and frightened by the experience.
