Osama Elkwildi: Libyan asylum-seeker from Cardiff

Campaign from South Wales Solidarity.

Campaign page

Our friend, Osama Elkwildi, fled to the UK, and sought sanctuary in 2011 from the Gaddafi regime. Such is the chaos that erupted during and after the NATO led regime change he now fears the armed militias targetting him and his brother, Ali, who are politically active against them. Since January 2012 he had no contact with his family and did not know where they were, until he finally heard from them in June 2013, such is the desperate situation in the country.

As of today, serious instability, security issues, and regional factionalism remain a significant part of everyday life in post-war Libya.

On Sunday 22 December he was detained by South Wales Police on City Road and transferred to Campsfield Detention Centre. Yesterday we received the dreaded news that he has received Removal Directions to Libya on a British Airways flight on 12 January 2014.

We don’t want our friend to be returned to Libya. We want him to stay in Cardiff where he belongs and where he has built a life for himself within his local community. We want his to be able to stay amongst us and to stay with his girlfriend who he loves dearly.

There is also now a Twitter account for news and updates on three people from South Wales detained by the Home Office in the last month.
